What it does

A cart that is too small costs more to pick, pack and send than it earns. Minimum Order for WooCommerce holds checkout until the order is worth taking, and tells the customer exactly what is still missing rather than simply refusing them.

Turn on a minimum spend, a minimum quantity, or both. The customer sees a plain sentence — "Add $12.50 more to reach the $50.00 minimum" — on the cart, at checkout and in the mini-cart. Classic checkout and the block cart and checkout are both covered, and so are the one-tap express buttons: a PayPal Express order is held to the same rules as any other, so nothing slips past while you are looking the other way.

The wording is yours. Write the message once, drop {remaining}, {minimum} and {current} where the numbers belong, and the settings screen shows you the exact sentence a short cart would see today. A shortcode puts that same message anywhere else you want it.

Most shops do not have one rule for every customer. Wholesale should skip the minimum, collection in person should not be held to a courier's figure, and a gift card should not pad the cart. Pro is the complete plugin. It adds those exceptions, and it keeps every setting you have already made.

See it in action

The message a paid shop draws: its own colours, an icon and a rounded box. A single-origin bag is in this basket, so the minimum asked for is the $90 that category carries rather than the shop's own $75.
Roles. Let an account past the minimums altogether, or give a role figures of its own -- the roastery's wholesale accounts buy to $240 and twelve bags, and the shop manager is excused.
Conditional minimums. What the shop asks for can depend on how the order is being placed: collection asks for nothing, the long haul asks for $95, an invoiced account asks for $240, and a delivery postcode can do either.
Exclusions. Equipment and the sample pack are left out of both totals, so a $6 box of filters cannot help a cart reach a wholesale minimum, and the checkout buttons stay out of sight until the rules are met.
Maximums. An upper limit as well as a lower one, with wording of its own, for stock a shop cannot oversell or an order it would rather look at before it ships.
Styling. Colours, shape, icon, size, weight and alignment, previewed against a real shortfall as you set them. The block cart and checkout are styled to match, and the wording is left alone.

What Pro adds

Everything in Free, plus all of the features below.

  • Exempt roles, so wholesale, staff and trade accounts skip the minimums entirely
  • Minimums per role, so retail and wholesale are not held to the same spend
  • Product and category exclusions, so gift cards and samples never pad the cart
  • Virtual and download-only products left out of the totals
  • Minimums that depend on the shipping method, payment method, category or postcode
  • Rules that let an order off entirely, which is what collection in person usually needs
  • The strictest rule that applies is the one that is used, so a rule can never quietly lower a minimum
  • A round minimum for each currency you sell in, so you can ask for $60 rather than whatever the day's rate makes of £50
  • Maximum spend and maximum quantity, capping what a single order may come to
  • Proceed to checkout and Place order hidden until the rules are met
  • Text, fill and border colours for the shortfall message, its size, weight and alignment, an optional basket or warning icon, and whether it is drawn as a box, a rounded box, an outline or no box at all
  • A live preview beside those controls that restyles as you change them, drawn by the same code as the real message, so what you see there is what the cart and checkout show, block or classic
  • Updates delivered to your Plugins screen from your PluginCity account

Frequently asked questions

Can wholesale skip the minimum?

Yes. Add the role under Exempt roles in Pro, and those customers check out without being held to the shop-wide spend or quantity.

Can different roles have different minimums?

Yes. Minimums per role sets a spend and quantity for each role. Leave a box blank to keep the shop default.

Can I waive the minimum for local pickup?

Yes. Pro sets minimums per shipping method, and a method can be marked as needing no minimum at all. Collection in person is the usual reason, and the same works for a payment method, a category or a postcode.

Can I ask for more on some orders than others?

Yes. Pro sets minimums by shipping method, payment method, product category or postcode. Where more than one applies, the strictest is used, so a rule can raise a minimum but never quietly lower one. Letting an order off has to be said outright.

Can I set a maximum as well as a minimum?

Yes. Pro caps what a single order may come to, by spend or by quantity, for stock you cannot oversell or an order you would rather look at before it ships.

Can I leave gift cards out of the total?

Yes. Add the product ID, or the category ID, under Exclusions in Pro. Those lines do not count toward spend or quantity.

Does it work with the block cart and checkout?

Yes. Shortfalls are reported through the WooCommerce Store API, so the block cart and checkout refuse to proceed and show the same message.

Does it stop PayPal Express?

Yes. A PayPal express order is checked as it is built rather than only when a checkout form is submitted, so a short cart cannot get through by skipping the checkout page. Express buttons in the block cart and checkout are held to the rules too, because they go through the same Store API check. A one-tap button added by another gateway to a classic checkout is the one case not guarded by name.

What does the spend minimum count?

The cart subtotal, before shipping. By default tax is counted only if your shop shows prices with tax included, so the rule uses the figure the customer sees in their cart. You choose whether coupons come off that amount.

Can the minimum exclude VAT?

Yes. Set the tax footing to Always excluding tax and the minimum is judged on the net figure whatever your shop displays. Trade suppliers usually want this: they show prices with VAT on but mean a net figure when they say the minimum order is £50. The opposite setting is there too, for a shop that shows net prices and means the gross total.

Does it work with a currency switcher?

Yes. Your minimum is typed once, in your shop's own currency, and converted for a customer shopping in another, so nobody is held to a figure that means something else. WPML's multi-currency, Aelia, WOOCS, CURCY and Price Based on Country are all read directly. Pro lets you set a round figure per currency instead, so you can ask for $60 rather than whatever the day's rate makes of £50.

Can I require both a spend and a quantity?

Yes. Checkout stays blocked until every enabled rule is met, and the customer sees a line for each shortfall.

What about a cart a coupon has brought to nothing?

That is yours to decide. By default a free cart is still held to the spend minimum, and a single setting lets it through instead.

Do virtual products count?

Yes: every line in the cart counts. Pro can leave virtual and download-only products out, and a cart with nothing left to count is not held to the minimum. A record sold with a download code still counts, because it still has to be posted.

Can I put the message somewhere other than the cart?

Yes. The [minimum_order_message] shortcode puts the same sentence anywhere, and it disappears once the order qualifies.

Can I copy my settings to another shop?

Yes. Settings export writes the configuration to a file and import reads it back, so a second shop is set up from a file rather than by hand. Pro's roles, exclusions, conditional rules and maximums travel in the same export.

What happens if a Pro licence lapses?

Nothing is deleted and nothing breaks. Your roles, exclusions, conditional rules and maximums stay saved, and the shop carries on enforcing the shop-wide minimums. Where a Pro rule was letting an order through — an exemption, or a cap — it stops, so a lapsed shop is never quietly selling below the minimum it set. The licence screen lists exactly what is being ignored, and renewing switches it all back on as you left it.
