Show or hide WooCommerce payment methods with simple rules: by cart total, shipping country and who is buying. Every rule is listed as a plain sentence.

What it does

Not every payment method belongs on every order. Cash on delivery makes no sense on a three-hundred-dollar order. Bank transfer is useless to a customer in a country your bank cannot receive from. Wholesale customers should see an invoice option and nobody else should. WooCommerce gives you a list of payment methods and one switch per method, so everybody sees the same list.

This puts rules on that list. A rule is some payment methods plus some conditions, and it either hides those methods when every condition is true, or shows them only when every condition is true. Every rule is listed on its settings screen as a plain sentence, such as "Hide Cash on delivery when the cart total is $200.00 or more.", so you can read down the list and check what your shop is doing without opening anything.

Rules can use conditions on the cart total, the shipping country and whether the customer is signed in. The cart total can count the items after discounts, with tax if your shop shows prices with tax, or the whole order including shipping, tax and fees. You choose, once, on the same screen. An empty cart never matches a cart total condition.

The rules are applied where WooCommerce builds its list of payment methods, so the classic checkout and the Checkout block both follow them, and they update as the customer changes their shipping method, country or coupon. A payment method that any rule hides stays hidden, and rules only ever take methods away from the list WooCommerce was going to show. A customer cannot get round a rule by posting a method that is not on the list: WooCommerce refuses the order, on the classic checkout and on the Checkout block. PayPal Payments' express buttons build an order without going through the checkout, so this refuses those itself when a rule hides PayPal. The rules do not apply on the page where a customer pays for an order that already exists, because there is no cart to judge.

Pro goes further. It has no limit on the number of rules, and adds conditions on the shipping method (a kind of method such as every flat rate, or one method in one shipping zone), on the customer's role (every role on your site, including custom ones, and guests), on the products in the cart (a product covers all its variations, and on a product page the product being viewed counts) and on the product categories in the cart (a category covers its sub-categories).

Pro also takes the quick-pay button of a hidden payment method off the page. In the Cart and Checkout blocks, an express button registered with the block in the standard way goes when its payment method is hidden: PayPal and Stripe's Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link were checked. On the classic cart, on product pages and in the mini-cart, PayPal's buttons follow the rules too, including the newer ones that ignore WooCommerce's own list. A payment method that already follows the list, such as Stripe's buttons on the classic pages, needs nothing from this plugin. The choice is one tick, and the hidden method's order is refused whether it is ticked or not.

If a Pro licence lapses, nothing is deleted and nothing stops. Every rule already written keeps hiding and showing payment methods, including rules that use Pro conditions or go past three. What stops is changing what Pro added: a new rule past three, a new Pro condition, editing a rule that uses one, and taking away express buttons. The licence screen lists exactly what is being left as it is.

See it in action

The rules screen: every rule is listed as a plain-English sentence, with a tick to switch it on or off.
Editing a rule: choose the payment methods, say whether to hide them or show them only, and add the conditions that must all be true.
The classic checkout for a $250 order: a rule has taken Cash on delivery off the list, and Direct bank transfer and Check payments remain.
The Checkout block for a customer shipping to Canada: the same rules apply, so only Direct bank transfer is offered.
Cart total: choose whether a cart total condition counts the items after discounts or the whole order, including shipping, tax and fees.
Five rules and no limit: Pro rules can also look at the shipping method, the customer's role, the products in the cart and their categories, and each is still read as a sentence.
A rule on the customer's role: Direct bank transfer is shown only to a customer whose role is Wholesale customer, with every role on the site to choose from.
A rule on the products in the cart: Check payments are hidden when the cart contains the Wine Gift Box, picked by searching for it.
Express buttons: when a rule hides a payment method, its quick-pay button can come off the cart, the product page, the mini-cart and the Cart and Checkout blocks too.
The classic checkout for a wholesale customer: the trade rule has switched Direct bank transfer on for them, and Cash on delivery is not offered because they are not collecting from the store.

What the plugin does

  • Rules that hide payment methods, or show them only, when every condition on the rule is true
  • Rules, each with its own payment methods and conditions
  • Conditions on the cart total, the shipping country and whether the customer is signed in
  • Every rule listed on the settings screen as a plain-English sentence
  • A cart total that counts the items after discounts, or the whole order including shipping, tax and fees
  • The classic checkout and the Checkout block both follow the rules, and update when the customer changes shipping, country or coupon
  • A payment method a rule hides cannot be used to place an order
  • A PayPal Payments express order is refused when a rule hides PayPal
  • A payment method any rule hides stays hidden, whatever the other rules say
  • Settings import and export
  • High-Performance Order Storage compatible
  • Not applied on the page where a customer pays for an existing order
  • No limit on the number of rules
  • Shipping method conditions: a kind of method, or one method in one shipping zone
  • Customer role conditions, including guests and custom roles
  • Product conditions, covering every variation, and the product being viewed on a product page
  • Product category conditions, covering sub-categories
  • Express buttons in the Cart and Checkout blocks follow your rules: a hidden payment method loses its quick-pay button (PayPal, and Stripe's Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link, were checked)
  • PayPal buttons on the classic cart, product pages and mini-cart follow your rules too
  • Your express buttons choice and your rules travel with the settings export
  • A lapsed licence keeps every saved rule working. Rules stay on screen to read but cannot be added to or changed until renewal, and express buttons are no longer taken away

Frequently asked questions

Which payment methods can a rule hide?

Any payment method WooCommerce lists on your site, whichever plugin supplies it: the built-in bank transfer, check and cash on delivery, and the ones PayPal Payments, Stripe and other gateways add.

What is the difference between hiding a method and showing it only?

A hiding rule takes its methods off the list when every condition is true. A show-only rule leaves its methods on the list only when every condition is true, and takes them off otherwise. Rules never add a method WooCommerce was not going to offer.

What if two rules disagree?

A payment method that any rule hides stays hidden.

Does it work with the Checkout block?

Yes. The block checkout reads its payment list from WooCommerce after every change to the cart, shipping or address, so a rule follows the customer as they go. The country is read once the address is complete, which is also when WooCommerce updates the shipping rates.

What does the cart total count?

Your choice, once, on the settings screen: the items after discounts, with tax if your shop shows prices with tax, or the whole order including shipping, tax and fees. An empty cart never matches a cart total condition.

Can a customer still pay with a method I hid?

No. WooCommerce refuses an order placed with a payment method that is not on the list, on the classic checkout and on the Checkout block. PayPal Payments' express buttons build an order without going through the checkout, so this refuses those itself when a rule hides PayPal.

Why might a hidden method's express button still show?

The rules control the payment list and refuse the order. The express buttons are drawn by the payment plugin above the checkout, and Pro takes those off for a hidden method.

Which express buttons does Pro take away?

In the Cart and Checkout blocks, any express button registered with the block in the standard way: PayPal, and Stripe's Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link, were checked. On the classic cart, product pages and mini-cart, PayPal's buttons, including the newer ones that ignore WooCommerce's payment list. It can be switched off with one tick, and a hidden method's order is refused either way.

Do rules apply when a customer pays for an existing order?

No. The page where a customer pays for an order that already exists has no cart to judge, so it offers whatever WooCommerce offers.

Can I make a rule for one shipping method?

In Pro. A shipping method condition can name a kind of method, such as every flat rate, or one method in one shipping zone. A cart with no shipping method chosen yet matches neither "is" nor "is none of".

How do product and category conditions work?

In Pro. A product covers all its variations and a category covers its sub-categories. On a product page, the product being viewed counts as being in the cart.

Which customer roles can I use?

In Pro, every role on your site, including custom ones, and guests. Whether the customer is signed in or a guest is a separate, simpler condition.

Does it work with High-Performance Order Storage?

Yes. Nothing is written to orders.

What is the licence key for?

Pro needs a licence key for updates and to keep its settings editable.

What happens if my Pro licence lapses?

Every rule you wrote keeps working, including rules that use Pro conditions or go past three. You cannot add a rule past three, start a new Pro condition, edit a rule that uses one, or have express buttons taken away until you renew. Nothing is deleted.

What happens if I deactivate WooCommerce?

The plugin steps aside and shows a notice. It does not fatally error, and your rules are waiting when WooCommerce comes back.
